Looks like that “locker” in the FX4 expedition is just a weak sauce electronic LSD that is NOT up to the task of anything resembling “locker” duties.
I mean, I never considered it to be a Land Cruiser replacement but given Fords experience and willingness to take risks with their off road vehicles I have to say this is a big letdown. I suspect the IRS necessitated a new rear diff carrier that was incompatible with the standard F-150's ACTUAL locker and this was the best they could do. I mean props for trying I guess.

Just seems lazy. Land Rover can do an electronic locker that actually works...Ford probably built it for them.

I read “IRS” as Internal Revenue Services and was wondering how it was related to taxes.
Then I got smart and realized it was independent rear suspension.

Neither are revered names in the off-road community.

I still question the need to try to offroad a vehicle like this when 99% of these expeditions
are going to be used for shuttling many children. IMO the 4wd/AWD system is really there to help on snow, ice and wet roadways. Maybe some slippery dirt but lets be honest no one is going to go drive some steep forest service roads in a $
60k+ expedition
.

You be surprised. Hunting season is on and I see lots of hu m drum and high end SUVs where they ought not to be.

Man, that thing really has no travel at all. Theres one (or two?) floating around Instagram that are really cool looking though.... on 35s I think. Probably makes that LSD-lock even shittier.

Seems downright FWD-based with all that spinning up front while the rears are doing nothing. Like a Chevy Traverse or something. Reviewer gave it good marks, though?

I was actually just reading about the Expedition FX4 and saw it didn’t have a locker like the other FX4 models. Not sure if it was a carrier issue or they thought the intended market would get more use out of an LSD than a locker you need to manually turn on.
I’m debating trading my land cruiser in for something newer since its 14 years old with 200k, and handling DD duties. That being said, I’ve also debated just buying a car and leaving the truck for dirty work.

An LSD is more useful on road, especially in snow, than a locker. Ther e are those of us that would like a nice SUV i can haul the family in, as well as go off road in.

If that’s the case toyota is probably the bet option with a 4runner. I had a suburban in the mountains for a year and it did okay but being so long it was very sketchy
if the road got tight or you needed to turn around.

My BIL has a newer 4Runner and its a very nice vehicle. Pretty much the same dimensions as my 100 series, but slightly narrower. My issue is we’re soon going to be a 2 kid, 1 dog family, and that makes for a very tight back seat. Technically we can use my wife’s minivan more, but i get bored to death driving it.

They do actually call it an e locker, both in their marketing and on the truck, but it’s just an elsd and not a very good one it seems.

Tfl aren’t the best reviewers. Good consistent content but their judgments and opinions aren’t very good

This press release from 2017 seems to call it a LSD, but it might have been changed after the fact. In any regard, it seems they prioritized on-road conditions, over off-road.
